Renewable Energy Certificates

Solar Renewable Energy Certificates (S-RECs) represent the clean, pollution-reducing and sustainable aspect of your solar power production facility. S-RECs, also known as green certificates, green tags, or tradable renewable certificates, are sold separately while you keep the electricity.

Electricity suppliers are required to secure a portion of their electricity from solar facilities and provides you with an additional economic benefit from investing in solar. The S-REC program allows you to sell your certificates to electric suppliers for them to meet their solar RPS requirement and you may qualify for federal tax benefits. All electric suppliers are required to use the S-REC program to show compliance with the State’s renewable portfolio standard. New Jersey’s electric suppliers have until August 31, 2005 to acquire the S-RECs they require to meet their 2005 reporting year.

Selling solar certificates or S-RECs based on the electricity production from your solar facility provides you with an additional economic benefit from investing in solar. The additional income you receive from selling the solar certificates increases the economic value of your solar system. Currently the solar certificates are selling for $100 to $200 for the cleanness of a one kilowatt system. For example, a five kilowatt system’s S-RECs could sell for over $500-$1000 a year in addition to the electricity it produces which is another $1200 per year, approximately.

Customers can buy green certificates whether or not they have access to green power through their local utility or a competitive electricity marketer without having to switch electricity suppliers. Currently, more than 30 organizations market green energy certificates at the wholesale or retail level nationally.
